Opening Night - April 25, 2013
The moment we heard that Immaculate High School in Danbury, Ct. was doing In the Heights we knew that we wanted to see it no matter who was in the cast. Songs from this show by Lin-Manuel Miranda are among our favorites in the studio. Besides, we wanted see how this musical all hangs together having heard such great reports about it from people who saw the production on Broadway.
Mike wins a leading role
Back in the Fall of 2012 an Immaculate High student, Mike Burns, came to see us for some tips on auditioning. He wanted a leading role which involved some singing and a lot of very dynamic rapping that greatly appealed to him. He was good for the part, took Christina’s advice on how to prepare effectively, and won the role he was after. After those few coaching sessions we didn’t see Mike again until we saw him on stage. It was a delight to see him in action on opening night captivating the audience.

Katrina’s solo
Katrina Geslien (age 10) was the featured soloist at Johnson School’s Choral Revue in Bethel on April 24, 2013. She sang Gimme Gimme by Jenine Tesori from the Broadway show Thoroughly Modern Millie. Her performance was remarkably self-assured as she shaped the many moods and tempi that this song requires, her voice ranging from sweet and gentle to all out belting.
Katrina took her first lesson from Christina Rovics toward the end of last January, only three months ago. She instinctively knew how to use her voice and had an innate love of singing. We put her on an upcoming studio concert before her second lesson on which she sang some musical theater favorites which she already knew. She was obviously in her element, welcoming this opportunity to perform.
In the next several months of training she built a repertoire of challenging selections, ready at a moment’s notice to use for auditions. Katrina’s choral teacher recognized her talent and gave her a solo spot on this school’s Spring program.
