Lauren is currently exploring her potential as a jazz vocalist. Christina turned her onto singer/pianist Diana Krall starting with Krall’s  very original smooth jazz song Peel Me A Grape.  Lauren studied Krall’s performance and surprised us with this remarkably polished rendition of her own one week later. The Karaoke Songfest on November 14, 2010 took place at Empire Szechuan Restaurant in Bethel on a Sunday afternoon. Nine students who are currently studying voice with Christina Rovics performed plus two guest artists, singing 26 songs in a 90 minute long program.  Once again Empire Szechuan hosted the occasion by providing us with a private room, a quality menu at reasonable prices and excellent service that never distracted from the music, our main reason for getting together.

The video that corresponds to this blog is a nine minute distillation of the program. It includes a few moments of voice training time with Christina shot spontaneously in the studio during the weeks of preparation leading up to our Karaoke Songfest.  The video omits only the two youngest singers (below the age of 13) who, by the way did beautifully. Their omission conforms to Youtube and Facebook’s protective privacy policies.
